Pollen and Perga
Pollen and bee bread (perga) in selected premium quality from Honig Schmidt
The pollen is the male reproductive cells of the seed plants, which are brought by the bees to the female part of the flowering plant. The plant attracts the bee with its nectar. Once the bee has landed on the flower, it is automatically covered with the pollen and then carries it to the next flower. But there is also enough pollen left over for the bee itself, which it sticks together with nectar to form small clumps and transports to the hive in tiny baskets on its hind legs, the pollen panties. A pollen pellet weighs about 6 - 10 milligrams. This is why beekeepers refer to this process as “hiving”. Once at the hive, the forager bee transfers the pollen to the hive bees, which in turn crush the pollen and mix it with honey.
Scientific studies have shown that pollen contains valuable ingredients for humans, such as protein, fats (polyunsaturated fatty acids), sugar, vitamins, minerals (especially potassium and phosphorus), amino acids and substances that inhibit bacterial growth. Analyses have also shown that pollen contains a greater variety and balance of various trace elements than any other food. This is why pollen is often referred to as a real superfood.
For pollen and products containing pollen, such as bee bread, it is important to ensure that you only purchase products that comply with the PA-limits (PA = Pyrrolizidinalkaloids). It does not matter which country the pollen comes from.
The pollen we offer is tested by a neutral laboratory with every new delivery we receive to ensure that it complies with these limits.
Current market information (as of 4th quarter 2024): Due to poor harvests of Spanish pollen, there is a significantly lower quantity of pollen that meets the PA-limits. As a result, our procurement prices, especially for Spanish pollen, have unfortunately risen extremely and we have to adjust our prices, sometimes significantly. We are trying to find other sources of procurement in order to be able to lower the prices again.
