What is propolis?
With propolis, also called bee putty resin, bees have always protected the beehive from intruders such as viruses, bacteria, germs and fungi. It is used by the bees to seal up all the cracks in the beehive on moving parts such as doors, windows, sliders, frames and more. Propolis acts as a natural antibiotic. Propolis therefore plays a major role in apitherapy.
Can propolis be harmful?
Propolis has an allergenic risk, i.e. if it is intolerant to propolis or components of propolis it can trigger an allergic reaction. This is the case for about 1% of people. In this case you should refrain from using propolis.
Is Propolis Good For The Immune System?
Propolis consists of over 250 identified ingredients and that in a balance that no industrially produced food supplement can match. The main ingredients are:

  • Vitamins A, B, C, E, H or B7 (better known as biotin, the active ingredient for skin and hair)
  • Iron, chromium, copper, zinc, manganese, selenium, magnesium, silicon

What are the side effects of propolis?
Propolis can cause allergic reactions. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment therefore describes in particular contact allergies on the skin when using products with propolis, such as creams. These reactions occur in around 1% of all people. When using propolis for the first time, therefore, always plan a test phase first, i.e. when using the propolis product externally, apply it to small areas and observe; when using propolis in powder or drop form, first take a tenth of the recommended amount and then over a period of 10 Days increase.
Is Propolis Useful?
In general, propolis has an immune-stimulating effect, strengthens general well-being and prevents colds.

How does propolis work on the skin?
Propolis is offered in care products as well as tropics and ointments for use on the skin. The cosmetic benefit consists in the nourishing and regenerative effect on the skin. Improve with propolis you can improve the complexion of your skin, because blackheads, pimples and blemishes can be treated very well with propolis. The best way to do this is to use propolis tinctures, which you dab directly onto the affected areas with a cotton ball.
In general, creams with propolis care for the skin and protect the skin barrier against bacteria, inflammation and other harmful influences in a natural way.
In addition, propolis is used for abrasions, scratches, sunburn, inflammation on the skin, acne, herpes and in the mouth and throat, as well as for sore throats.
How many drops of propolis can I take a day?
As a rule of thumb (and unless otherwise prescribed): 1 drop of propolis tincture per kilogram of body weight, i.e. a person weighing 60 kg should consume a maximum of 60 drops of propolis tincture (preferably divided into 3 doses over the day). When taking it for the first time, it is recommended to start with only a tenth of the amount and slowly increase the dosage of propolis.
What should I look out for when buying propolis?
When buying propolis, look for high-quality, certified goods. If you want to achieve the best effect, you should only buy high-quality propolis with the highest possible propolis content. In the case of inferior goods, the effect often leaves a lot to be desired. Don't save in the wrong place - a high quality product cannot be found in the supermarket for a few euros. In addition, one should make sure that propolis is not contaminated.
Can propolis be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Even though propolis is said to have a number of positive effects, it is generally not recommended to take bee putty resin during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is justified with the allergic potential of propolis. In particular, caution is required in the case of a pollen or bee sting allergy.
Does propolis help with nail fungus?
Propolis can effectively support the development of nail fungus, as propolis is one of the natural anti-fungal agents. Nail fungus (nail mycosis, onychomycosis) is an infectious disease that affects the fingernails and / or toenails and is caused by filamentous fungi (dermatophytes, molds) or sprouts (yeasts). The fungal spores cause a white to yellow-brown discoloration of the nail, it becomes thicker and often also brittle to crumbly. To treat nail fungus, apply the propolis tincture directly to the affected nail and let it dry. The propolis tincture then sticks to the nail and can develop its effect. Alternatively, foot baths with propolis can also be helpful. Put 30 drops of propolis tincture in a water bath. The exposure time should not be less than 20 minutes.
Does propolis help with toothache and inflamed gums?
Good results are achieved with propolis (e.g. propolis toothpaste or propolis tincture) in oral and dental care, e.g. with inflamed gums, caries and periodontal disease. This also applies to inflammation of the oral mucosa and generally to inflammation in the mouth and tongue area.
Propolis also has a strong anesthetic effect. This means that painkillers can be replaced in a natural way in the case of toothache, and the healing process is supported and positively influenced, for example, in tooth root treatments.
Tip: If you have inflamed gums, we recommend brushing your teeth with our propolis toothpaste. Then put some propolis tincture on a cloth and massage the tincture into the affected gums. The symptoms should improve quickly.
Can propolis also be used for pets?
As with humans, taking propolis does not replace a visit to the doctor - in this case, the veterinarian. However, propolis is also being used more and more by veterinarians as a preventive measure and as an alternative to conventional forms of treatment. Propolis balm is often used, for example, on dogs, cats or horses. The area of application includes small wounds, itchy eczema or supports grooming.
